I have always been passionate about fabric, textiles and sewing. As a young child I would watch my mother take tissue paper patterns, carefully pin them to her chosen fabric and sew them with precision. Within a brief time, I would be modeling her latest creation. It was a magical process and I just knew I had to experience it for myself. At the age of 9, without mom knowing, I convinced my brother Bruce to turn the handwheel on my mother’s vintage sewing machine while I carefully stitched fabric and made a pair of little overalls for my doll. I proudly presented my creation to a surprised mom. She was so very proud of her protégé.
From that moment I was hooked on sewing, designing and creating. So many other hand crafts have crossed my path including knitting, rug hooking, embroidery, counted cross stitch and the list goes on.
I began quilting when my children were very young. With three little boys, a night out to learn a fun new hobby sounded like a great idea, so I took a beginner course through our local parks and recreation program. Taking pretty fabrics, cutting them up into tiny pieces and then putting it all back together like a puzzle was a magical experience for me. That beginner course in a church basement with a very patient teacher all those years ago launched me into the world of quilting.
Courses I have taken in art and photography show in my quilting through colour, texture, light and composition. Gardening, nature and life experiences also stimulate and inspire many of my designs.
I began designing in 2011 with tremendous encouragement from my husband Michael, family and friends. My goal is to design and write patterns that are easy to follow, pay careful attention to detail and include plenty of diagrams and illustrations. I am very passionate about designing and sharing my ideas and innovations with fellow quilters. Having the opportunity to create and share what I love is the greatest reward I could ever imagine.
My joy for quilting shines through in the classes that I teach as I take students on a journey into quilt making. I have taught many classes and workshops at all levels for local quilt shops and guilds. I have been rewarded with comments about my positive energy; patience and passion for the art of quilting and helping students feel comfortable while gaining confidence with instruction in a fun, supportive and positive environment.
I love everything about quilting and designing, most importantly the wonderful people I have met along the way. Quilters truly are amazing people! I feel very blessed to have this opportunity to share and inspire others to create fun projects and family heirlooms.
I welcome you to join me on a journey in creating your own quilted memories to last a lifetime.
